Controlling Weeds And Moss In Your Lawn | Maintenance
It is possible to fight weeds by using preventative and mechanical nursing
measures. Lawn grass needs to be promoted by preventive measures and then the
weeds will be pushed back by natural competition. The measures are dependent on
the kind of weeds, the size of the surface, the lawn type etc. The right care
i.e. the right cut height and frequency, verticuting as well as aerating will
support the lawn grass and the sward density. This will therefore help to
suppress the weeds.
A sward full of gaps will make it easier for the weeds to take hold. Weeds
often establish if the surface is cut too tight, if the sward is damaged by the
wrong use of fertilizers and if damage occurs due to animals, weather, sports
etc. If your maintenance measures are not successful, it is possible to fight
the weeds with chemicals. There are pure weed pesticides, however it is possible
to get combined fertilizers with weed pesticides.
Excess moisture, insufficient exposure, insufficient drying of the shaded
areas, nutrient deficiencies and insufficient care all favour the development of
moss. So firstly you must try to remove these favourable conditions. In
addition, any moss that has developed should be fought in early spring as
follows: The lawns first cut should be tight. Afterwards a mixture of iron II
propose– sulphate and ammonium sulphate. Using a ratio of 1:1 to 1:2 with approx
100g / square meter on the mossy surface. Afterwards the moss will change colour
to brown / black and then it dies. Now it can be raked well away from the lawn
sward.Where the lawn sward is full of gaps it should be over-seeded so that no
new weeds or undesirable grass can take hold in the spaces left by the moss. Use
coated seed which guarantees an optimum success of the over-seed.
In spite of good care every lawn becomes older and gaps will appear. What can
be done?
Over-seed – coated seed should be sown after cutting along with the spring
fertilizer application. The lawn is thereby rejuvenated every spring by new
seeds. Repair and rejuvenation are carried out as follows:
1. Cut the lawn as tightly as possible, so that there are only stubbles. Work
with a grass collector so that the cut grass is collected and immediately
removed. If there is cut grass left on the lawn, rake this to leave the surface
clean.
2. Now scarify the surface to disturb the soil and to remove the lawn felt
and plant leftovers. Afterwards clean the surface thoroughly so that the lawn
seeds will have enough light and air.
3. Greenfield coated seed should be scattered at 30-35g /square meter and
rolled. To speed up germination and to prevent the seed drying out, sprinkle the
seeds with water
